Joy That Lasts… “Advancing the Gospel”

Take Notes Here
Paul shares an update on his current state, which is under house arrest and chained to a Roman guard. During this time, Paul is unable to go about his normal work of planting and visiting churches. Paul, being Paul, can’t help but share how the Gospel is being advanced in his current state- both to his guard (v. 13) and other believers emboldened to share the Gospel (v. 14). He tells the reader that he is rejoicing (v. 18a) because the Gospel is being advanced, regardless of his current state.
Ice breaker: Share the last time you were a “captive audience.” What was the conversation like?
Read Philippians 1:12-14
Paul was chained to a guard 24/7 and went about his days, which may have included talking with fellow believers, praying, and meeting with close friends. What are some ways that Paul’s guards were observing the Gospel in Paul’s life?
If someone was chained to you for a whole day, what would they tell their friends you cared about and believed in?
How does Paul proclaiming the Gospel while arrested reframe how/when the Gospel is advanced?
In a few sentences, how would you tell someone about the Gospel and why it is important?
Read Philippians 1:15-18
In your own words, what is the tough situation in which Paul is rejoicing? What is the trouble that is being stirred up?
Recall a time God used hardship in your life to advance, not hinder, the Gospel.
How can we take Paul’s perspective of a Gospel-centered life and enact it in our own lives?
