Icebreaker:  Have you ever bitten into a piece of rotten fruit?  What was that experience like?

Read Ephesians 4:29 – 32

  • What is the context to this passage?  Why is Paul reminding his readers who they used to be without Christ vs who they are with Christ?
  • In verse 29 Paul reminds us that our words are not to be like dead rot wood or decaying fruit.  When have you experienced words like this?  How did they affect you?
  • Paul then uses a construction term meaning to edify, strengthen or to build up.  How have you experienced words that build you up?  How did they affect you?
  • When has someone said something helpful, even if it didn’t feel good to hear?
  • Are there people in your life that you have been “tearing down” with your words?  What is God calling you to do?
  • This week, who is God calling you to build up with your words? Who in your life needs encouragement? What’s your next verbal step?
