Can you remember a season of sorrow that you have experienced?

What did it feel like?  How did it impact you?

Read Matthew 1:18-24

What do you know about Joseph?

Where do we see the connection between sorrow and joy expressed in Joseph’s life?

Describe the sorrow Joseph must have experienced when he discovered that Mary was carrying a child that was not his. How does God turn sorrow to joy with the message of the angel?

Describe the sorrow Joseph must have experienced when he recognized he could not provide adequately for Mary or Jesus. How was this sorrow replaced with joy during the angel’s announcement?

How was Jesus’s circumcision a moment of sorrow for Joseph?  How did joy replace sorrow as Joseph recognized that pain would ultimately accomplish God’s plan?

What was Simeon’s prophetic message and how did it bring sorrow to Joseph? How did naming Jesus bring Joseph joy?
