How to Study the Bible… “Application”

Sermon Application Questions

Take Notes Here

When we study God’s Word, we embark on a journey to discover God’s love for us and the world we live in. The Bible reveals who God is, how He works in the world, and what it means to follow Him in everyday life. When we study the Bible carefully—paying attention to context, purpose, and meaning—we allow God’s Word to shape our beliefs, correct our assumptions, and guide our decisions. This journey helps us to faithfully follow and become like Jesus.

This week we learned how to develop good application questions.

These questions help us move from knowing God’s Word to living God’s Word. As you are studying the Bible, ask:

  1. What is God revealing about Himself?
  • What does this passage show me about God’s character?

  • What does this reveal about what God values or desires?

  • What does this teach me about how God works in the world?

  1. What is God inviting or challenging me to believe or change?
  • Where do I see myself in this passage?

  • Is there something I need to accept, reject, or rethink?

  • Is there an attitude, habit, or response God is confronting in me?

  1. What is one specific, obedient step I will take this week?
  • Good application is simple, concrete and actionable.

If you only had time for one question…ask, “If I really believed this passage, what would look different in my life this week?”

READ PHILEMON 1: 17-25

  • What relationship in your life needs to be reshaped by the grace you’ve received from Christ?

  • In verse 17, Paul tells Philemon to welcome Onesimus in the same way that he would welcome Paul. Why would that be a challenge? Who is God calling you to receive differently because of the gospel?

  • In verse 18, Paul asks Philemon to transfer the debt that Onesimus owes to his account. What relational “debt” are you still holding onto that Christ is asking you to release?

  • Are you holding onto someone else’s “debt”? What is Jesus asking you to do with it?

  • What step toward reconciliation is God inviting you to take right now?

  • This week, who will you reach out to? What will you say? Who will be praying for you as you seek to rebuild this relationship?
