Joy That Lasts… “Knowing Jesus”

Sermon Application Questions

Take Notes Here

Ice Breaker: What is something you used to be proud of that doesn’t seem nearly as important to you anymore?

Read Philippians 3:1-11

  • Paul begins in verse 1 by telling believers to “rejoice in the Lord.” How has knowing Jesus helped you to rejoice this week?

  • In verses 4–6 Paul lists his religious accomplishments. If Paul were writing today, what kinds of things might people list as their “spiritual résumé”?  What might be on your list?

  • Paul says he once placed confidence in the flesh. In your own words, what does that mean?  Where do people today tend to place their confidence instead of Christ?

  • In verse 7 Paul says he now considers those things a loss. Why do you think religious success, status, or performance can actually become obstacles to knowing Christ?

  • In verse 8 Paul says, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” What does it mean to know Christ, not just know about Him?

  • Paul says he wants to “be found in Him…not having a righteousness of my own.” Why is it hard for people to accept that righteousness is a gift rather than something we earn?

  • In verse 10 Paul says he wants to know Christ, the power of His resurrection, and share in His sufferings. Why do you think Paul connects resurrection power with suffering?

  • What is one thing in your life that might compete with your relationship with Christ?

Prayer: Ask God to help you value knowing Christ more than achievements, reputation, or comfort. Pray that Good Sam would be known not for religious performance, but for people who truly love, know and follow Jesus.
