Trellis: A Jesus Shaped Life… “Sabbath”- 10/25/26
Ice Breaker If you had a completely free day with no obligations, no phone, and no to-do list, what would you actually do with it? And be honest: how long before you’d start feeling guilty?
READ GENESIS 2:1–3 God didn’t rest because He was tired; He rested because the work was finished. What does it say about God, and about us, that rest was built into creation before sin ever entered the world?
Adam’s first full day of life was a day of rest. What changes when you think of rest as the place your work comes from instead of the reward you earn after it?
READ EXODUS 20:8–11 & DEUTERONOMY 5:12–15 Exodus 20 grounds the Sabbath in creation; Deuteronomy 5 grounds it in freedom from slavery. What “Pharaoh voices” push you to produce more, earn more, or prove yourself? What would it look like to resist them?
READ MARK 2:23–28 & LUKE 13:10–17 Jesus kept the Sabbath, yet He kept breaking the religious rules around it. In these stories, what does Jesus show us the Sabbath is really for?
READ MATTHEW 11:28–30 Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest. What’s the difference between taking a day off and receiving rest from a Person? Which have you mostly experienced?
Stop. Rest. Delight. Worship. Which of the four comes hardest for you, and what is one concrete step you’ll take this week? Who in the group can check in with you?
